TITLE: As 12 Badaladas - "The 12 Strokes"
Synopsis: The video begins with the artist showing clear drowsiness while holding the TV remote control on her hand. It was done frame by frame using pixilation technique, when the artist was photographed lying on the floor on her way from the living room to her bed. She looks as if she is sleeping throughout the whole way, as if she was pulled or crawled on the floor. Through the entire video we can hear the sound of an old wall clock, which tolls 12 times in the end. SINOPSE EM PORTUGUÊS: Este vídeo utiliza a técnica de animação chamada Pixilation, ou Stop Motion, que consiste na capatação do objeto quadro a quadro, realizando inumeras fotografias que posteriormente criam uma sequência de animação. Esta pode ser considerada uma das mais antigas técnicas de animação. O vídeo acontece em ambiente doméstico, falando do comum, do ordinário. Mostra do jeito como o mundo é, sem arranjos ou adereços estetizantes. Inicia com artista demonstrando eminete sonolência enquanto segura controle de TV. O sono aumenta e ela simplesmente adormeçe em pleno sofá da sala. Em seguida mostra o trajeto percorrido pela artista, diretamente da sala até seu quarto. Este trajeto se dá com a artista sempre deitada ao chão, como se literalmente estivesse se “arrastando”, cheia de sono, até sua cama. O som é o de um relógio de corda antigo, culminado com doze initerruptas badaladas. Ao final do vídeo, com a imagem congelada ao som das doze badaladas do relógio, aguardamos algum eminente acontecimento, pairando assim certo suspense e drama na atmosfera do fechamento. Trabalhar com a manipulação do espectador é uma das características que perpassam muitos dos trabalhos desta artista, sempre sugerindo a criação de um tempo outro, que não o real.

Artist Biography
Paula Barreto (b.1969) where she currently lives and works. She begins to study painting and drawing techniques at a tender age in the now extinct art courses in the Museum of Modern Art in Rio de Janeiro. After graduating in Visual Art at PUC University - RJ in 1990, she immediately starts to work in the photography studio of Milton Montenegro, a well-known photographer in Brazil, then moves on to work as a video art director in AV Produções e Marketing for six years.
From 2000 to 2003 she started to follow art courses in Escola de Artes Visuais (School for Fine Arts) in Parque Lage, RJ, studying with well renowned Brazilian artists. Among them: Anna Bella Geiger, Fernando Cocchiaralle, Luiz Ernesto Moraes e Ricardo Becker. She also participated in the "Project: Dialogues" with Rosangela Renó e Adriana Varejão at the Helio Oiticica Art Center in 2001.
In 2001/02 she followed an art study group with prominet brazilian artist,
Nelson Leirner and at 2003 she directed "Out of Control", a short film authored by Anna Bella Geiger shown at Paço Imperial Art Center in Rio de Janeiro.
